Jest rok 2018. Apokalipsa już się dokonała. Maszyny opanowały świat, wytrwale tępiąc ukrywających się ludzi. John Connor (Christian Bale), który w przyszłości ma zostać przywódcą ruchu oporu , na razie jest zwykłym żołnierzem. Wśród bojowników pojawia się nieoczekiwany przybysz: Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington). Wszystko wskazuje na to, że przebył on podróż w czasie. Nie wiadomo jednak, czy z przeszłości, czy też z przyszłości. Marcus nie ma pojęcia, skąd wziął się w tym zrujnowanym świecie. Pamięta tylko tyle, że prowadzono go na egzekucję, ta zaś najwyraźniej się nie odbyła. Kim jest ten człowiek?
